Why Arsenal could win the runners-up prize

Who will come second in the Premier League? At this stage of the season we would love to be writing about who will win the English Premier League, but it’s pretty much a one sided race, isn’t it?

Maybe Chelsea will slip up. Maybe having Costa injured will cost-a them the title? Maybe…

With Chelsea still having Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool left to play before the end of the season, we could well be writing an article soon titled “Who can win the league”, but we are happy (for now) to predict that Jose and his men will continue to scrape the draws and get the victories necessary to – at the very least – get them over the line at the end of the season. So let’s turn to second place…

The second place prize has to go to either Arsenal, Man Utd or Man City.

Liverpool have an outside chance but they would need all 3 teams above them to slip up. We predict it will be a close finish between the two Manchester teams and the Gunners and the last 3 games are decisive. So, here is our prediction:

Manchester City have hit bad form at a bad time. They may recover but they are 5 points off second place and their last 3 games involve relegation battling QPR (who were recently narrowly beating by Chelsea), Highest ever point finishers Swansea and Southampton – who will most likely still be battling for that important 5th spot.

We predict a 3rd or 4th place finish for Man City as they look to a new start after the summer break (we could soon be writing a blog “who will replace Pellegrini”!)

Meanwhile on the other side of Manchester…

On Sunday 17th May, Manchester United will play at home to Arsenal. The gunners will have two games remaining while Man Utd will only have one.

It will be a tough match and Man Utd have a 60% win record at home to the gunners but the pressure may be more on Man Utd to win. Especially as Arsenal will have a game in hand at that stage.

If Arsenal can get a result of any kind then they should cruise to second place after beating a struggling Sunderland and seriously out of form West Brom.

We are going to make two bold predictions: Firstly that Arsenal will get a result in this important tie and as a result they will narrowly beat Man Utd to second place in the league, followed by Man City in 4th.

It may be yet another year without a title for Wenger and Arsenal fans, but it’s the best on offer at this stage of the season.

We would love to hear who you think will take second place (or even win the Premiership title!). Let us know your thoughts or just put your predicted team for second place in the comments below. If you think your team will win and you are feeling brave, why not tweet to us on @Sportsanddesign with a picture of your Football top.

Whoever finishes second, it will be an exciting finish to the season.  Although for Chelsea fans, any excitement late on would probably not be welcome…
